If you've been around awhile this is a perfect time to visit and show your continuing support of our student and staff. New and returning staff members will be introduced, the Springfield cheer squads will add spirit to the festivities, while the fall sport athletes and coaches share their enthusiasm for their upcoming sport seasons. Ms Wells is a lifetime Longhorn who gets REALLY EXCITED about music & performing arts. She is joyfully prepping music & her other passion, the library, for success!

CO State Patrol helped staff know more about substances that impact youth & community. CSP Officers Pointon & Bronniman gave us detailed information about types, symptoms, & availability in SECO. Staff were surprised, riveted, & concerned as we learned.





It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Kathy Self, Business & FACS. Mrs. Self really needs no further introduction as she returns to the classroom being described in our Baca Co community as "an outstanding & amazing human". She grew up on a ranch in SE CO, built a business, inspired gardening & trees, raised a beautiful family, worships in church & can't wait to teach again @ SHS. We are blessed to have you in the hallways again Ms. Self.


It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Bill Pattie, 6-12 Band. Mr. Pattie is no stranger to our Longhorn Band Program! He is coming out of retirement to keep the program going as we continue to search for the perfect fit for our music program. We are excited to have him here and know that his experience will add excellence and history to our Longhorn band.


A reminder that Preschool enrollment is on August 10th and August 14th, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Enrollment packets can be picked up at the preschool on August 8th.


It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Julia Mondragon, 6-8 Language Arts. A lifetime Longhorn indeed, Julia joins our team in her first classroom assignment. She is excited to continue (she subbed for JH Science last spring) as a full time staff & coach! Welcome to the greatest show on earth Ms. Mondragon!

It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Samantha Manuel - 4 & 5th Grade. Ms. Manuel is a lifetime Longhorn and is excited to begin her 3rd year of teaching in Springfield. Ms. Manuel says, "Some things I enjoy in Baca County are the hunting opportunities and getting to enjoy the sporting events, volleyball and basketball. I am the proud owner of a new house and starting the journey of a homeowner!" We are proud of you too Sam, welcome to the team!


It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Rafe Hutches. Mr. Hutches is no stranger to our students and coaching staff. This year Mr. Hutches will be teaching Health and PE 6-12 at SHS. Rafe is an outdoorsman at heart; skiing, hunting, and fishing is where you will find him year round. But, look out students because Mr. Hutches says, "I love instructing the promotion of locomotion and establishing fundamental strength in our youth. I am extremely excited to begin the school year and get to work in the gym!"


It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Colette West, 6-12 Art. YES we have an Art teacher and she is a diverse person who contributes to society in many ways. Mrs. West is a Longhorn alum and says, "I am most proud of my family and being part of the FBI to receive the 2014 Director’s Community Leadership Award for my work at the Global Refugee Center in Greeley, CO; and being called "Mother of All Nations". Mrs. West and her husband, Jeremy, have 5 children and are Main Street locals volunteering consistently for the good of our community.

It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Brenda Chick - 4 & 5th grade. Ms. Chick, another lifetime Longhorn, is starting her 11th year in teaching, where she has been both a grade school teacher and a Social Studies specialist at many levels. Ms. Chick has one son, a 6th grader at Campo, whom she is very proud of! Ms. Chick says, "I am so excited to be back at Springfield Elementary as a teacher! I have many amazing memories as a student and can’t wait to make new memories with my students!"


It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Kira Oliver. Ms. Oliver graduated from Hot Springs County High School in Wyoming, and found her way to OPSU to study mathematics. She is an avid reader, adventurer, and loves her family (including the 4-legged canines). Ms. Oliver began teaching Math in 2018 in Guymon, OK, but found her way to Baca County (Vilas) shortly after. She is excited to continue her Math teaching career as a Longhorn, and will impact students as the SHS Volleyball Coach and Student Council Advisor.


The Two Buttes (North) bus route will run as usual this school year. Several families have reached out asking about the school's ability to run the route. We have a fully certified driver and are planning for the morning and afternoon routes daily beginning August 14. Your driver will contact families as enrollment details iron out the week of August 07.

It's a Great Day to be a Longhorn, welcoming our new staff: Darian Schaller. Darian is a lifetime Longhorn & is going to teach K-5 PE this school year. Darian says "I’ve always been a pretty big sports fan, especially when it comes to basketball. I really enjoy coaching and getting the opportunity to work with the kids. In my free time, I like to travel, work on a couple old cars, and spend some time with family and friends. I’m excited to be able to start my teaching career in my hometown." ~ We are very excited too Darian!
