The Springfield High School FBLA Chapter attended the Colorado State Conference at the Gaylord Resort in Denver on April 1-3, 2024. Eleven students competed in twelve different events. President, Bryann Forrest competed in Economics; Joy West, Electronic Career Portfolio; Thomas Schmidt, Introduction to Business Concepts; Introduction to Event Planning –Team Jason Miller and Dakota Reid; Rylan Smith, Introduction to Event Planning; Parker Arbuthnot, Introduction to Financial Math; and
Marketing—Team Jacquelyn Grigat, Tyanne Miller and Rayne Thomas. Joy West placed in the top ten in her event while Thomas Schmidt placed fourth in Introduction to Business Concepts.
Thomas will advance to Nationals to compete with students all over the United States. The FBLA National Convention is June 28 through July 2 in Orlando.
The Springfield Chapter has 16 members. Their competition includes events in computer skills, accounting skills, personal finance, speaking and ag business to name a few.

Over the next few days we will be highlighting 8 FCCLA projects that have qualified and will be competing at state April 4th-6th. Our sixth project is by Clarissa Cooper, Joy West and Valerie Woller.
Introducing "Air Bee n Bee," a collaborative project under Sustainability Challenge by Joy West, Valerie Woller, and Clarissa Cooper. This project mainly focuses on the environmental impact from construction waste in landfills and the need for bee preservation. Our innovative initiative project transforms recycled construction materials from the school project into bee hotels, providing cozy accommodations for solitary bees. By collaborating with the Springfield Construction Trades class, this project showcases the repurposement of materials from landfills and reducing environment impact. By recycling construction materials and creating habitats for pollinators, our project not only promotes sustainability, but biodiversity, and environmental conservation as well.

Reach For the Stars Not Drugs is a chapter service project where elementary, middle school, and high school students are all educated on the dangers of drug and nicotine use. Rayne Thomas, Tyanne Miller, and Brody Rosengrants went into all of the classrooms in the Springfield School District with a presentation on the effects of marijuana, cigarettes, vapes, oral nicotine pouches, and secondhand smoke. A survey was given before and after the presentation to gauge how insightful the presentation was for the students. After the elementary presentations, personalized star shaped cookies were given to each elementary student to remind them to reach for the stars, not drugs.

Scrubs and Suds is an event in entrepreneurship by Shirley West in which a business plan was written that dictates a hypothetical business, in this case, a laundry business based in Springfield. Scrubs and Suds is designed to help ease the stress on late-night shift workers, such as construction workers or hospital staff, but is also open to all. Through long hours of researching and typing, the business plan of Scrubs and Suds was created and refined, ready to compete at State. The project helps teach the difficulty of becoming a business owner and helps raise awareness of the struggle of our city and community workers.

CALENDAR CANGE: Baca County Baseball will host Stanton County on MONDAY, April 1st at 3 PM in SPRINGFIELD. This will be a varsity double header.

Lainee Leathers, FCCLA Vice President, and Bay Ellis, FCCLA Secretary, finalized their FCCLA ‘Star Event’ project this week. The initiative was titled ‘First Aid for Freshmen. The project was based on teaching First Aid and CPR to Springfield High School freshmen. Lainee and Bay first raised money through a breakfast burrito sale, to pay for the cost of the class materials. With the help of the Springfield EMS group, Springfield FCCLA, and the volunteers who contributed to the burrito sale, the freshmen students acquired the skills, knowledge and importance of CPR and First Aid in the ‘Living On Your Own’ class.

Our second project is by Colin Swanson and Gunner Mackey. Through the help of the Springfield FCCLA Chapter and the Baca County Sheriff's office, Colin and Gunner, hosted a women's self-defense course teaching fourteen high school girls applicable self-defense skills to help create a safer future for women in Baca
County.

Our first project is from FCCLA Co-President Aliya Cohoon and Karina Garcia, Vice President. They have created a project titled ‘We Read, You Read, I Read’. This project ensured that K-5 children have a better chance of obtaining reading material. Implementing all three learning styles into class time includes kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learning. We are both very passionate about children, making this project so important to us. The two seniors are very thankful for a good working relationship with the elementary teachers. The teachers allowed the two of them to be involved in their classrooms.
